HVAC Emergency? Here's What to Do Before Help Arrives

When your AC fails during a heat wave, staying calm and taking the right steps matters. Here's our emergency guide.

By Mike TorresPublished August 21, 2021

An HVAC failure during extreme weather creates stress. Knowing what to do while waiting for professional help keeps your family safe and potentially prevents additional damage.

When Your AC Stops Cooling

**Step 1: Check the Thermostat** Verify settings are correct. Replace batteries if the display is dim. Try lowering the temperature 5 degrees to trigger the system.

**Step 2: Check the Breaker** A tripped breaker is a common cause of apparent AC failure. Reset if tripped, but if it trips again immediately, leave it off and call for service.

**Step 3: Check the Filter** A severely clogged filter can cause system shutdown. Replace if dirty and see if the system restarts.

**Step 4: Look at the Outdoor Unit** Check for obvious problems: debris blocking the unit, ice on the lines, or unusual sounds.

When Your Furnace Won't Heat

**Step 1: Verify Thermostat Settings** Ensure it's set to "heat" and the temperature is set above current room temperature.

**Step 2: Check the Gas Valve** The valve near your furnace should be parallel to the gas line (open position).

**Step 3: Check the Breaker** Even gas furnaces need electricity for controls and blowers.

**Step 4: Look for Error Codes** Many furnaces have LED lights that flash codes indicating the problem.

Staying Comfortable While Waiting

**During Heat Emergencies:** - Close blinds on sun-facing windows - Use fans to circulate air - Stay hydrated - Consider temporary relocation for vulnerable family members

**During Cold Emergencies:** - Close off unused rooms - Use space heaters safely (never unattended) - Layer clothing and use blankets - Never use outdoor grills or generators indoors

When to Call for Emergency Service

Call immediately if you notice: - Burning smell from the system - Gas odor near the furnace - Sparking or visible electrical damage - System smoking - Carbon monoxide alarm sounding
